Allbirds Review: Are the Wool Sneakers Still Worth It in 2026?

We may earn a commission if you buy through our links. How we review

Allbirds Wool Runner sneaker in Natural Grey with a light grey sole, side view

The short answer

Allbirds still sells the same light, washable wool and tree-fiber sneakers at $75 to $165, but the purchase is riskier than it used to be. Since the brand changed hands in 2026, returns must be unworn, return shipping costs extra unless you buy coverage, and no product warranty is stated. Buy only if you're confident about fit.

Good for

  • Shoppers who already know their Allbirds size in a specific style

What Allbirds is

Allbirds makes casual sneakers, slip-ons and sandals from natural and recycled materials: Merino wool, a eucalyptus-derived fiber sold as TENCEL lyocell, and a sugarcane-based foam the brand calls SweetFoam. According to the brand's own history page, co-founder Tim Brown started the project in New Zealand, later teamed up with Joey Zwillinger, and launched the first shoe, the Wool Runner, in 2016.

The company behind that shoe is not the one selling it today. In 2026 Allbirds sold its brand, trademarks and shoe business to American Exchange Group in a deal Inside Retail reported at US$39 million, with licensing platform WSG Brands as co-owner. Allbirds.com is now operated by AB Dnam, LLC, a Florida company based in Beverly Hills, California. Its terms of use, last updated August 6, 2026, say they replace the previous operator's terms. The store sells mainly shoes, plus a few apparel pieces and socks, and ships within the US.

What makes it different

Light, washable shoes made from natural fibers

The pitch hasn't changed: Allbirds says its shoes are soft, breathable and light (the brand lists the men's Tree Runner at 8.6 oz in a size 9), and that most of them can go in the washing machine. Its care page recommends a cold, gentle cycle in a delicates bag, insoles removed, and air drying. That's useful for a shoe many people wear without socks. It also means the uppers are knit fabric rather than leather, which matters for how they wear over time.

Sizing depends on the style

Allbirds has no single sizing rule, and this is where most return headaches start. The brand's own fit notes say the Tree Runner, the Wool Cruiser Waterproof and the women's Varsity Strap run small, so it recommends sizing up. The Dasher NZ and the Cruiser, it says, fit true to size for most customers. The flip-flop comes in full sizes only, and Allbirds suggests sizing down if you're between sizes.

Some classic styles are sold in whole sizes only. When we checked, the men's Tree Runner and Wool Runner came in sizes 8 through 14 with no half sizes, while newer styles such as the Dasher NZ, Cruiser Canvas and Varsity offered half sizes. If you're a half size, read the fit note on the exact product page before you order.

New owner, stricter returns

Older Allbirds reviews describe a relaxed return policy. The current one is stricter. Returns and exchanges are accepted within 30 days of delivery, but only for items that are unworn and unwashed, with original tags attached. You pay for the return label unless you added return coverage at checkout, and returns that don't meet the rules "may be rejected" and are forfeited. Orders placed before June 11, 2026, go through help@allbirds.com instead of the returns portal, which suggests the cut-over date to the new operator.

Durability is on you

Allbirds doesn't state a product warranty, and its terms disclaim warranties beyond those expressly set out. Independent long-term testing is thin. In a 2023 Tree Runner review, The Savvy Backpacker's founder reported no problems after about three months of travel and city wear, but said that was too short for a durability verdict. The brand sells replacement insoles, which helps with odor and cushioning but not with a worn outsole or a torn knit upper.

The product range

Full-price shoes run from $50 (the flip-flop) and $55 (the Allbirds Slide) up to $165, and most everyday sneakers sit between $100 and $140. Socks start at $14. These are the styles most shoppers compare:

Current offers

Allbirds doesn't run a public sitewide code. Discounts come from a GovX program for healthcare, military and government workers, a free-shipping threshold, and markdowns on leftover colors, most of which are final sale.

  • 15% OFF

  • FREE SHIPPING

Free ground shipping on orders over $100

Most full-price shoes are $100 or more, so a single pair usually qualifies. Below $100 the cart showed $5.00 shipping. The site warns that orders may take up to 30 days to ship.

  • 30% OFF

Women's Strider in Warm Red for $91 (was $130)

Not tagged final sale when we checked, so the normal 30-day unworn return rule should apply. Only sizes 7 to 10 were in stock. The $130 is the brand's own earlier price.

  • UP TO 55% OFF

    Final-sale markdowns, e.g. Women's Wool Runner for $49 (was $110)

These markdowns are tagged final sale, so they can't be returned or exchanged. Most were down to one size (often women's 5) when we checked.

The Wary Check

Allbirds passes five of the six checks. The one it fails, warranty, matters more than usual here because worn shoes can't be returned.

Price and value

Allbirds prices are straightforward. There's no subscription, no membership and no bundle math. Sale items show a crossed-out price, and that crossed-out price is measured against the brand's own earlier list price, not a market average.

StyleFull priceSizes and fit note (per Allbirds)
Cruiser Canvas$75Half sizes offered
Tree Runner$100Whole sizes; runs small, size up
Tree Runner NZ$100Half sizes in women's
Wool Runner$110Whole sizes
Varsity$120Half sizes offered
Dasher NZ$140Half sizes; true to size
Wool Cruiser Waterproof$140Runs small and slightly narrow
Wool Runner-up Mizzle Plus$165Women's whole sizes

On value, the math is simple. At $100 to $140, Allbirds costs about the same as mainstream casual sneakers from big athletic brands. You're paying for the materials and the light, sock-optional feel, not for performance cushioning or a guarantee. The sale section can look generous, with markdowns of up to 55% when we checked, but those pairs were mostly down to a single size, often women's 5, and final-sale items can't be returned or exchanged.

Stock is the other thing to check. Many full-price colors were thin on sizes when we looked: the men's Tree Runner in Jet Black, for example, showed only one of its seven sizes available, while the Dasher NZ had every size in stock. If your size is missing, Allbirds offers a back-in-stock email sign-up on product pages, but it doesn't promise a restock date, and limited-edition colors may not return.

The GovX discount is the only percentage-off deal that applies to full-price shoes. If you qualify, 15% off a $140 Dasher NZ saves $21, and the order still clears the $100 free-shipping line.

Shipping, returns and warranty

The point most affiliate reviews skip: Allbirds' 30-day window only helps if the shoes are still unworn, and sending them back costs you a label unless you paid for coverage at checkout. The store lists that coverage add-on at $0.80 to $4.98, and the product page notes it doesn't apply to final-sale items. Shipping is free over $100, but a site-wide banner warns that orders may take up to 30 days to ship, and the shipping policy says Allbirds won't replace packages marked delivered that go missing.

PolicyWhat Allbirds saysSource
ShippingFree ground shipping over $100 ($5.00 shown in cart below that). Processing takes 1–6 business days, and a site banner warns orders may take up to 30 days to ship. Allbirds says it won't replace lost, stolen or undelivered packages.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Prices are clear and there's no subscription: most shoes cost $75–$165 at full price
  • Product pages give style-specific fit advice (for example, 'size up' on the Tree Runner)
  • Allbirds says most shoes are machine washable and gives care steps
  • Free ground shipping on orders over $100, which one full-price pair usually clears
  • A 15% GovX discount for healthcare, military and government workers

Cons

  • Returns must be unworn and unwashed, so you can't wear-test shoes outside and send them back
  • Return shipping is on you unless you buy coverage at checkout; rejected returns are forfeited
  • No product warranty is stated
  • A site banner warns orders may take up to 30 days to ship, and lost packages won't be replaced
  • Several classic styles come in whole sizes only, and markdowns are mostly final sale in one leftover size

Who it's for (and who should skip it)

Good fit: the repeat buyer

If you've worn Allbirds before and know your size in a specific style, most of the risk goes away. You know how the Tree Runner fits, you can stick with that size, and the free shipping over $100 covers a single pair.

Good fit: the qualifying professional

Healthcare workers, service members and government employees who verify through GovX get 15% off once a year. Combined with free shipping, that's the lowest legitimate full-price cost we found.

Skip it if...

You like to wear new shoes on a walk or two before deciding. Under the current policy, that makes them non-returnable. Skip it too if you want a written warranty, need structured arch support, or plan to put running mileage on a lifestyle sneaker. And if you're a half size in a whole-size-only style, ordering is a gamble.

FAQ

Is Allbirds legit?

Yes. Allbirds is a real shoe brand founded by Tim Brown and Joey Zwillinger, and allbirds.com is its official store. In 2026 the original company sold the brand and shoe business, and the site is now operated by AB Dnam, LLC of Beverly Hills, California, per its terms of use. Policies changed with the new operator, so read the current return rules rather than relying on older reviews.

Can you return worn Allbirds?

Not under the current policy. Allbirds accepts returns and exchanges within 30 days of delivery only for items that are unworn and unwashed, with original tags attached. Returns that don't meet the requirements may be rejected, and rejected returns are non-refundable and forfeited. Try new shoes indoors on a clean floor before deciding.

What is Allbirds' return policy?

You have 30 days from delivery to return or exchange unworn, unwashed items with tags. Socks and accessories must be unopened. Final-sale items, gift cards and insoles can't be returned. You pay return shipping unless you added return coverage at checkout, original shipping isn't refunded, and refunds go back to the original payment method only.

Does Allbirds have a discount code?

Allbirds doesn't publish a public promo code on its site. Healthcare workers, military members and government employees can verify through GovX to receive a single-use 15% code, limited to one per year and not combinable with other codes. The site also has markdowns, though most are final sale.

Do Allbirds run small or true to size?

It depends on the style. Allbirds' own fit notes say the Tree Runner, Wool Cruiser Waterproof and women's Varsity Strap run small and recommend sizing up, while the Dasher NZ and Cruiser fit true to size for most customers. The Tree Runner and Wool Runner come in whole sizes only.

Are Allbirds durable?

Allbirds doesn't state a warranty, so durability is on you. In a 2023 review, The Savvy Backpacker reported no problems after about three months of travel and city wear but said that was too short for a durability verdict. Allbirds sells replacement insoles and says its shoes can be machine washed.

Does Allbirds offer free shipping?

Yes, on orders over $100: Allbirds offers free ground shipping above that amount, and the cart showed $5.00 shipping below it. Processing takes 1–6 business days, and a site banner warns that orders may take up to 30 days to ship due to demand.

Who owns Allbirds now?

Allbirds sold its brand and footwear assets to American Exchange Group in a deal reported at about $39 million, with the sale reported complete by June 2026. Inside Retail reports that AEG co-owns the brand with licensing platform WSG Brands. The website is run by AB Dnam, LLC.

Final verdict

Allbirds still makes a pleasant, light everyday sneaker at a fair $100 to $140, and pricing is easy to read. What's changed is the safety net. Under the operator that took over in 2026, returns must be unworn and tagged, return shipping costs extra unless you buy coverage, rejected returns are forfeited, and no product warranty is stated. That makes Allbirds a reasonable buy for people who already know their size and a riskier one for first-timers. Read the fit note on the exact product page, skip final-sale markdowns unless the size is certain, and use the 15% GovX code if you qualify. Try new pairs on indoors before you decide.
